My Nest

I woke up this morning in a century-old farmhouse in the middle of a cornfield, somewhere in rural Ohio. Cows and dilapidated outbuildings are scattered all around me. The man I love is by my side. Our vicious cat Vanessa is tugging at my socks. There is enough rich fodder around me to feed my vivid imagination for years to come.

My name is Joanna. I’ve been a single mom for much of my adult life. I successfully raised both a son and a daughter into adulthood; they were my inspiration for doing, striving, and being. About ten years ago, I struggled to find purpose in my life after my last little bird flew the coop. Now that I’m a little older and have the benefit of hindsight, I have the opportunity to look upon this season of my life from a brand new perspective. I’m choosing happiness.

I find myself with lots of free time on my hands now that my career is winding down. I like to fill that time wearing out old hobbies and discovering new ones. When I’m not juggling cats, tapping away on my laptop or wandering in the garden, I have a pair of knitting needles or a book in my hands. I enjoy writing about a kaleidoscope of topics, including travel, gardening, mental wellness, and holistic health. You can read more of my writing at
